I was born and raised in Alturas, California, a small ranching community on the edge of the Great Basin. Growing up I wanted to be a cowboy, but in high school I decided to go into ministry.
I’ve been a ranch hand, sheepherder, hay baler, volunteer firefighter, maintenance man, worked in rangeland conservation, a New Testament and Ministry Teacher’s Assistant, and a small groups pastor at an Presbyterian megachurch church in Silicon Valley. I received my B.A. in Bible and Theology from Simpson University and my M.A. in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary.
I want to do theology for the church and from the front lines of ministry. I am guided by St. Anselm’s classic maxim of “Faith seeking understanding.” I believe the best theology is rooted in the great wisdom streams of historic, orthodox Christianity. I also believe we can’t just repeat what our fathers and mothers in the faith have said, but must find new, faithful expressions. Ultimately, good theology is practical, accessible, and missional.
